Chapter Eight

“Whoa! What a mess.”

Rafe tore his gaze from the heart-stopping scene of destruction and whirled on Cody. He flung the other man back against the wall, fist cocked at his side. “I told you to go with her! Whoever did this may still be here!”

Cody tore free and sprinted for the stairs without a sound. Penny flung open her door and stepped out. “What’s all the commotion?”

Grimly, Rafe gestured her forward. “Have a look.”

He stepped inside and walked over to the gaping closet. The few items of clothing Kendra had originally brought with her still hung from hangers. At the very back of the closet the green cocktail dress was barely visible behind a baggy sweatshirt. Whoever had done this had probably overlooked it.

Or they wanted Kendra to think exactly what she did think.

“Who did this?” Penny asked.

“Good question. I’ll let Mitchell know.”

“You don’t think Kendra…?”

Rafe swore. “Of course not.”

“Okay, I’ll check with Rosa to see if she or Maddie heard or saw anything. Where is Kendra?”

“She ran toward the corral. I sent Cody after her. She thought I did it,” he admitted bleakly.

Penny gaped. “You can’t be serious.”

Rafe shrugged and headed for Mitchell’s room. He didn’t want to admit how much Kendra’s accusations had hurt. He tried to tell himself he could see why she made them, but that didn’t take away the sting.

KENDRA SPURRED the horse on recklessly, chasing across the open fields. Tears dried on her cheeks or were whipped away by the wind. She’d been bitterly wounded by what she saw as Rafe’s betrayal, but even as she finally slowed the large chestnut horse to a more sedate pace, she recognized the foolishness of her accusations.

If she’d paused to think, even for a minute instead of instantly reacting, she would have realized Rafe wouldn’t have done something like that. Maybe he didn’t want her along, but the snake and the attack at the mall and now tonight…Kendra shook her head. Not Rafe. He might have hired someone to test her new skills, but he wouldn’t have done it in such a way that they had to file a police report. She had an enemy on the Smoking Barrel all right, but it wasn’t Rafe.

She didn’t want to believe it was Penny either, but Penny was the next obvious person. Penny had a crush on Rafe. Penny had seen Rafe kissing her. And Penny had been distant and cold when Kendra first arrived. In fact, this sudden turnaround was suspicious itself.

How could Penny view her as a rival for Rafe’s affections? Of all people, Penny knew what was really going on. Besides, even Penny had said Rafe wasn’t the marrying kind. That kiss he’d given Kendra had been for show—to get her to loosen up. Rafe wanted her to behave like a woman having an affair with him but he wasn’t seriously interested in her.

Didn’t Penny understand that?

Maybe not. Kendra and Rafe had been spending a great deal of time together. Perhaps Penny thought Rafe was carrying over the playacting into reality.
